The Joy of Pets

The role of a pet over the tears from that of a simple guardian or mouse-catcher to one of a true companion and family member.

Dogs, Cats and other pets have become an integral part of our every day lives, and the relationship that exists between humans and animals has become known as the human-animal bond. Not only has pet ownership become more common, but many pet owners also have more than one pet. Pet ownership provides responsibilities that should not be taken lightly.

Pets are family members that need to be cared for throughout their entire lives, not disposable possions thta be discarded if they become inconvenient. Pets also carry financial responsibilities for housing, a quality diet, and veterinary care. The latter includes routine veterinary examinations, parasite control including heartworm prevention, treatment during an illness or emergency, dental cleanings, and so forth.

The money and time devoted to pet care are substantial, but the rewards are much greatre. Research has shown that the bond that can develop between people and animals as a result of owning and caring for a pet has significant social and health benefits. Dogs provide companionship, a sense of purpose, and unconditional love. These qualities can especially benefit lonely, elderly or mentally disturbed people.

Research has also shown that pet ownership can prolong both length and quality of life by reducing stress, blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. Many studies have shown that there are health benefits for owners who develop close bonds with a pet. Pet owners have fewer health problems. The company of a pet relaxes and entertains people, but the benefits of pet ownership go beyond simple joy.

Companion animals have also benefited from their closer association with people. In the past few decades, drugs and vaccines have been developed specifically for animals that have eliminated many of the infectious diseases that can shorten pet's lives. Under proper supervision, pet ownership also teaches children about responsibility, caring and commitment.
